August usually means hot temperatures, and cool refreshing drinks that rehydrate your body. I have a melon smoothie that not only tastes great, but also re-hydrates. And it's quick and very inexpensive. In fact you probably have the most of the items on hand already. This recipe will easily make 4 very large glasses.
You will need:
1 banana
cantaloupe
watermelon
salt
1/3 cup coconut water
1/2 cup ice cubes
1/3 cup milk (any kind of milk, from skim to whole)
2 teas. sugar (or sugar substitute)
Peel the banana, (I always have these in the freezer, so I always just use one from my freezer).
Peel and chop your cantaloupe and watermelon (about 3 cups). You can use any kind of melon, honeydew and crenshaw very good to add in for this smoothie.
Now place the fruit in the freezer until icy cold, but NOT frozen (about 20 minutes).
Pour the milk, coconut water, banana, melons, sugar, ice, and a pinch of salt in the blender. (Note: I like to use coconut water with lime juice.)
(Note: if you don't have coconut water with lime juice you can use plain coconut water and 2 teas of lemon or lime juice, OR you can substitute 1/3 cup of apple juice, or white cranberry juice, and 2 teas of lemon juice. You just need a touch of the tart to bring out the sweetness of the melons.)
You can use any kind of milk, (almond milk, whole milk, skin milk, 2% milk), I usually use skim milk to cut out the fat and calories.
Puree until uniformly smooth, about 20 - 30 seconds.
Give it a taste for your family's desired sweetness. (If it needs a little more sugar or lemon juice added in, and puree for another 2 or 3 seconds.)
Pour it into a glass, and enjoy. A cool, refreshing, and re-hydrating smoothie the whole family can enjoy.
Give it a try.
Enjoy.
